A Estrada de Jack Kerouac: Uma Viagem Existencial

Abstract

Este estudo faz uma leitura da obra On the Road, de Jack Kerouac, enquanto romance que tem como tema uma viagem interior e existencial. Essa viagem inicia-se com o relato da inquietação de Sal Paradise, um artista em conflito com a sua existência e em busca do mistério que leva à criação de arte. A demanda levará o escritor ao encontro de situações limite, que o ajudarão a desdobrar-se em várias versões existenciais e a ver o mundo através de um ângulo que será o fundo da sua personalidade. Dean Moriarty é, nesse âmbito, um pólo de referência crucial, cuja presença se torna catalisadora mas também desafiante para o crescimento do narrador enquanto narrador de histórias. Será feita uma reflexão sobre o modo como o existencialismo religioso de Kierkegaard é transportado para uma estrada (meta)ficcional, que representa a viagem ao fundo da personalidade e até às margens últimas da consciência para construir a própria voz e, através dela, criar arte. O mundo que o escritor em crescimento descobre no âmbito dessa viagem é um espaço confuso, selvagem e habitado não só por musas, mas também por demónios e fantasmas.

This study reads Jack Kerouac´s On the Road as a novel whose topic is an interior and existential voyage. The journey begins with the description of the anxieties felt by Sal Paradise, an artist who is in conflict with his existence and who finds himself in search for the mystery that leads to the creation of art. This quest leads the writer to seek extreme situations that help him unfold himself into his several existential versions and to see the world through an angle that would be the very bottom of his personality. Dean Moriarty is in this context a crucial point of reference, whose presence becomes a catalyst but also a challenge for the narrator's growth as a storyteller. The study further aims to examine how the religious existentialism of Kierkegaard is transferred into a (meta) fictional road that stands for the journey towards the bottom of the voyager´s personality and the outer limits of consciousness as a means to find a voice and create art. The world discovered by the writer in the context of that journey is a chaotic and wild space, inhabited not only by muses, but also by demons and ghosts.
