Gibbon covered this epoch far more eloquently; the Romans themselves did it considerably more tersely in their own annals. Between the two extremes of brief state records and the glorious sweep of the Decline and Fall, there is a great deal of room for a whole range of approaches to a subject which is apparently of perennial interest.
