The following comments about the Metropolitan University were excerpted from Chancellor Belck's address during her investiture as the chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha in April 1998.
Toward the end of the l9th century, the British statesman Benjamin Disraeli wrote, "In a progressive country, change is constant...change is inevitable." Those words are still true today.
For a forward-looking university, change is the lifeblood of its being. We expand and reconfigure our curricula to reflect ever-changing knowledge and society's ever-changing needs. Our scholars expand the boundaries of knowledge, while our artists reveal the rich panorama of human experience and imagination.
As educators, we broaden students' understanding of their world so they become better, more productive citizens. We challenge them to examine their lives, to develop personal goals, and to prepare for constantly changing careers. Those who enter our doors, whether as students, clients, or partners, should not leave unchanged. It is the unique capacity of educational institutions to take us beyond our limitations-to ideas, challenges and achievements often unimagined.
