Abstract
This study analyzes the case studies that have been conducted for top ten maritime incident zones. More number of incidents has been reported to the areas where there are heavier shipping traffic activities. As a result, many case studies have been published based on the regions where the vessel losses are highest due to incidents. The issues of interest, the solution methodologies and their research contributions are summarized for each region. Our analysis shows that there are similarities among the problems, and some of the results can readily be applied to different regions as well.

1. Introduction
Maritime accidents occur more often in areas with heavy traffic. Many case studies on maritime safety mainly focus on zones of frequent accidents. Figure 1 shows the top ten marine accident black zones. The case studies we cover in this study are from 1995-2012 and our research indicates that most existing case studies have focused on top maritime accident zones around the world (Figure 1). Even though the studies try to address existing problems in these zones, our findings show that there is nearly no collaboration between researchers and their results are not applicable to other areas. This is mostly either due to the difference of the settings or assumptions made. The purpose of this study is to review the existing maritime case studies and guide researchers in making more collaborative research in future. Rest of this study is as follows: search methodology for the papers is discussed in section 2, characteristics of these papers are discussed in Section 3 and conclusion in Section 4.
2. Search Methodology and Scope of the Study
In this section, we discuss the search methodology and the boundaries of our survey. Our study focuses on published journal papers and proceedings that are related to maritime case studies. There was no limitation on the databases used. The keywords used were maritime, risk, safety, security, collision, grounding, navigation, port and marine to search for articles published in English. The scope of this review is on studies until 2012.
Having defined the boundaries of our survey, we proceeded to verify which of the papers identified fit into our scope. In terms of screening process, we divided...
