The study of philosophy represents a particular challenge to the casual reader in that many of the thoughts, constructs and precepts of the great thinkers defy a reductionist treatment. Hence, it is pleasing to discover that Audi and his team of writers have rather sought to present a revised volume such as this that gives an expansive and scholarly, and yet still relatively accessible, treatment to such a challenging field of study. In developing from the previous edition of 1999, also reviewed in these columns (RR 2000/170), this work has drawn on over 550 authors in its production of 5,000 entries dealing with philosophers and philosophical terms, which are not solely limited to Western thinkers and scholars.
