The old saying "a picture is worth 1000 words" is certainly true when teaching today's young television generation and California's large number of English Learners. For the abstract concepts of history-social science, highly visual models and instructional strategies are almost essential. For example, when the fifth grade textbook describes the Lewis and Clark expedition in this manner "In 1804 Lewis and Clark were given the important job of exploring the Missouri River and finding a safe route to the Pacific....The group called itself the Corps of Discovery" most fifth graders see little worth remembering. However, after viewing the video Lewis and Clark: Tools of Survival (New Dimension Media), these same students gain deep appreciation for the beauty of the American landscape, the back-breaking labor required to navigate against the current and portage the heavy boats, the fear and indecision surrounding the need to pick travel routes in unfamiliar territory, and the challenges of interacting with indigenous peoples of unknown languages and cultural norms.
