A 61-year-old man developed hypercalcaemic crisis following over-medication with calcium carbonate [Tums Ultra] for heartburn.
The man regularly took 3-4 calcium carbonate 1000mg tablets per day (equivalent to 1200-1600 mg/day of elemental calcium) although on occasion he increased his intake to 4-6 tablets per day. He presented with a 3-day history of increased confusion...
