Burnside Industrial Park in Halifax, Nova Scotia is considered a living experiment in transforming an existing industrial park into an industrial ecosystem. The park is the focus of a multidisciplinary research and development programme based at the School for Resource and Environment Studies, Dalhousie University. The goal of the programme is to develop tools and strategies that would promote materials and energy exchanges among firms in the park, along with waste reduction and improved environmental performance within firms.
Burnside was established 25 years ago and has grown into one of Canada's largest industrial parks, encompassing 1200 hectares, with more than 1200 businesses and about 18,000 employees. These firms import a large variety of materials into the park and generate a wide range of wastes, creating vast potential for exchanges among firms.
