The Celebrity Attitude Scale was given to 600 college students from the Manila area in the Philippines. Mean scores were much higher than those reported in all studies done previously in the United States and England. Results were discussed in relation to the absorption-addiction model.
The 23-item Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS) was developed in an effort to measure attitudes towards one's favorite celebrity (McCutcheon, Maltby, Houran, & Ashe, 2004). Its three subscales measure Entertainment-Social (ES; "I love to talk with others who admire my favorite celebrity"), Intense-Personal (IP; "I am obsessed by details of my favorite celebrity's life"), and Borderline Pathological (BP; "I often feel compelled to learn the personal habits of my favorite celebrity"). According to the absorption-addiction model developed by the same authors, many persons become interested in celebrities because they are a frequent source of entertainment that can be discussed with friends.
