Effective communication with colleagues is essential for quality nursing practice. One method that encourages regular communication among nursing professionals is the concept of nursing diagnosis. Implementing this process by emphasizing use of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) list of approved nursing diagnoses was a recent goal for our nursing division. As occurs with any change, we encountered some barriers. We therefore developed a creative activity to demonstrate the clinical feasibility and the use of the nursing diagnosis process for our particular patient populations.
NURSING DIAGNOSIS
Within the nursing profession, nurses have been seeking ways to improve communication regarding patient needs. In an effort to seek a common language relating to clinical judgments about patient care, leaders in the field developed the concept of nursing diagnosis. Although the concept has been in existence for several years, nursing diagnosis increasingly is becoming an accepted part of nursing care and the nursing process. While planning ways of implementing nursing diagnosis divisionwide, we coined the term "ADPIE." ADPIE is an extension of the nursing process acronym, APIE (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to include "diagnosis." Staff members were encouraged to seek out and use the NANDA-approved list of nursing diagnoses and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) guidelines for cancer nursing practice (McNally, Stair, & Somerville, 1985).
