People often ask me, "What does the law say?" about their particular situation, or they will tell me what they think the law says about their problem. People view the law as justice in black and white.
I used to think the law was simple and straightforward; that it was something akin to the Ten Commandments, i.e., "Thou shall not steal." Then I went to law school and learned to "think." "Ah," I can hear you say, "That's what's wrong with her." Sad, but true, perhaps.
Now I look at such simple fiat as "Thou shall not steal" in an entirely different light. Suppose you visited your neighbor and found he had your chainsaw in his garage, without your consent or knowledge. It would appear he had stolen the chainsaw. Simple? Suppose your neighbor just mistook your chainsaw for his, which is identical...
