Abstract

[...]the majority of the rapidly growing literature on Holocaust cinema reveals a need to more critically reflect on the intertwined nature of Nazism and patriarchy. By expanding on the narrative of the film's source text, including the additions of the more active complicity of Lore's mother, the crazed woman's continued devotion to Hitler and Lore's virulent antisemitism, all of the film's characters are made considerably less sympathetic than in the novel. [...]through the adaptation process, Shortland reveals that the filmic medium has the potential to facilitate a complex exploration of how women were implicated, and simultaneously victimised, in the Third Reich.
