The ANSI Z41-1999 standard is under review with the intent of publishing a revised version in 2005. The proposed changes expand maintenance activities. Revisions being considered include:
Integral components. Section 1.4.1 will clarify that the standard does not endorse aftermarket "hang-on" or "strap-on" toe appliances, toe caps, metatarsal guard appliances, protective toe overshoes or other devices as adequate foot protection.
Nonmetallic protective caps. Consumer use of nonmetallic protective caps is growing. However, the environment and use may differ from traditional steel toe caps and, thus, affect selection and use requirements. The revision will address compression- and impact-testing requirements and environmental issues (e.g., brittle when exposed to fuel) specific to nonmetallic caps.
Chainsaw protective footwear. The revised standard will include a new Section 7...
