Pathologists in mid-career will recall their initial exposure to "Anderson" in its 1970s incarnations with mixed feelings. Solidly bound in its indestructible Mosby cover and printed on heavy stock, the Anderson of yesteryear glowered with aristocratic indifference at the needs of the practicing pathologist. Museum-like repositories of immaculate observations on the pathogenesis of disease, those editions were not concerned with teaching the pathologists practicum, nor was there much effort at making the content accessible to medical students. Left without an audience, copies of Anderson tended to languish on bookshelves like family Bibles, honored but unused.
