The AFI Catalog of Feature Films is a filmographic database with approximately 70,000 entries on feature and short films. Films included span from 1893 to 2011 and include AFI award nominees through 2014. Due to limited resources, some films are only partially cataloged. The AFI Catalog Academic Network works with film students from affiliated universities like UCLA to provide plot and production note information to supplement basic records. An AFI editor and faculty advisor reviews final content. New records are continually being added but no specifics are provided.
For films, it would be hard to a find a source more accredited and recognized than the American Film Institute. The organization's goal is to promote America's film heritage. ProQuest also offers the Catalog and its content for a fee through its own interface. Without a subscription, it is difficult to discern the differences in content between the AFI and ProQuest offerings. Many free databases, like ERIC , often have a licensed version through major vendors like EBSCO, and there are few if any differences in content. As such, I don't expect major differences in this instance. The Catalog and its contents are free when users access it through the resource's AFI homepage.
The Catalog 's home page is clear and provides a brief explanation of how to search for film records. The only minor advertisements present are the ones from the AFI...
