Este ensaio argumenta que o pensamento de Smith deve ser interpretado a partir do contexto intelectual proporcionado pelo iluminismo escocês. As origens e a natureza específica desse movimento são apresentadas, procurando-se destacar alguns aspectos que diferenciam o pensamento social dos literati escoceses daquelas orientações que vieram a prevalecer no campo da economia.
