Many milestones have been passed since the founding of the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB) in 2004. The number of applicants is approaching 150 and the number of accredited pharmacies is near 40. Moreover, over 200 pharmacies have made contact on the PCAB website, expressing an interest in PCAB accreditation. My question to you is much like a Baptist preacher at the time of the altar call: "Can I count you in that number?"
The milestones of PCAB are more than mere numbers. In 2006, the American Medical Association passed resolution 120.945, recognizing PCAB as a means to identify compounding pharmacies that adhere to quality and practice standards.1 Furthermore, PCAB has served as a "go-to" entity for numerous organizations searching for information about the requirements to ensure quality pharmacy compounding. This is evinced by the participation of PCAB in a legislative workshop in Colorado concerning pharmacy compounding, the involvement of PCAB in discussing solutions to the Avastin access issue with ophthalmologists, and the invitation to PCAB to present at a meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee and Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents. Finally, many PCAB-accredited pharmacies anecdotally report that being awarded accreditation has had a positive impact on their bottom line. A compounding pharmacy growing its business on the basis of quality is a positive movement for our profession.
