The ceremony to celebrate the 2014 Elizabeth Haub Award for Environmental Diplomacy took place at the University Club in New York on 28 July 2015. Liliane and Christian Haub, the grandchildren of Amalie Luise Elisabeth Haub, continued their family's commitment to the work of the International Council of Environmental Law (ICEL) and the IUCN Environmental Law Programme, joined by their three children and a diverse group of diplomats, UN functionaries, environmental law practitioners and academic experts and students. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also attended the event to honour the Laureates. In the midst of finalising negotiations on the UN's "Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Global Action", the gold medals bearing the "Wheel of Law" were conveyed to H.E. Macharia Kamau (Kenya) and H.E. Csaba Korösi (Hungary) for leading successful negotiations of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Opening Address
Opening the ceremony, Provost Uday Sukhatme made the following statement:
"Excellencies, Mr Secretary-General, Ambassador Kamau and Ambassador Hetesy, IUCN Permanent Observer Kakar, Honoured guests Christian and Liliane Haub, Members of the Award Jury, Pace faculty, ladies and gentlemen:
I am Dr Uday Sukhatme, Provost of Pace University, and I am pleased to welcome you to this special evening to present The Elizabeth Haub Award for Environmental Diplomacy to Ambassador Macharia Kamau and Ambassador Csaba Korösi. Due to an important matter, Ambassador Korösi is not able to be with us tonight. We certainly miss his presence this evening. However, we are honoured that Ambassador Dr Zsolt Hetesy, Chargé d'Affaires of the Hungarian Permanent Mission, is with us to accept the Award on his behalf. It is our great pleasure and honour to have Ambassador Kamau and Dr Hetesy with us, and we welcome you both.
We are honoured to welcome His Excellency Ban Kimoon to this evening's commemoration of the diplomatic achievement embodied in the Sustainable Development Goals. Thank you, Mr Secretary-General, for joining us.
I would like to recognise the representatives of the Haub Family, Mr Christian and Mrs Liliane Haub. It is wonderful to see you here tonight. Your commitment to this Award ceremony each year is so very much appreciated. We commend you on your environmental stewardship efforts at the Tengelmann Group and elsewhere. We thank you for working with Pace...
