Abstract

This study is a pedagogical attempt at presenting an intermediate grammar of Navajo for bilingual educators. The primary focus is to present the grammar in terms of individual morphemes coalescing into compound prefixes and conjugation patterns with a secondary focus on phonological rules. This study hopes to serve as a quick guide to understanding the staples of Navajo grammar, The Navajo Language: A Grammar and Colloquial Dictionary, Revised Edition (1987) and Analytical Lexicon of Navajo (1992), Navajo's relation to other languages, the basic sounds of Navajo and historical development of the standard writing system, the structure of the Navajo verb, the relationship between Tense, Aspect, and Mode, classificatory or 'handling' verbs, and use of metaphor and metonymy in word creation. It is the hope of this study to aid bilingual educators in their endeavor of maintaining the transmission of Navajo from generation to generation.
