Resumen

Chitin is a key component of the cuticle of insects and exoskeleton of crustaceans, the cell wall of true fungi and that of some algae [1]. The membranes of chitosan-sensitive fungi (e.g., Neurospora crassa) are highly-fluid (rich in polyunsaturated free fatty acid (FFA) such as linolenic acid). Testing deletion strain mutants confirms Lipase Class III, Monosaccharide transporter and Glutathione transferase encoding genes (NCU03639; NCU04537; NCU10521, respectively) as main chitosan targets in N. crassa [36]. Antifungal proteins, such as PAF from Penicillium chrysogenum, have a mode of action similar to chitosan since they also permeabilise plasma membranes and induce ROS production [65,66].
