GSQE Body of Knowledge area: LG. Standards and Models
The Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is the defacto standard for software process improvement (SPI). It is a model that helps software organizations assess their performance, and define and deploy processes to improve their way of working, to deliver business value. This book describes version 1.3 of the CMMI model, which was released by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) in October 2010. The main changes in this third edition of the CMMI are clarifications of the high-maturity process areas, alignment of the representations (staged and continuous), and the addition of modern engineering practices like agile.
The three authors of the book have invited people who worked with CMMI to share their experiences, and contribute them as cases or examples to the book. This supporting material has been added throughout the book to help the reader to get a better understanding of the model and how ?t can be applied. For instance, HiIIeI Glazer describes 10 things to be aware of when doing process improvement, such as creating a culture of learning and staying aware that CMMI Is the means and not the end.
Interpreting and deploying the CMMI high-maturity process areas (level 4 and 5) has posed problems for many organizations. For instance, many organizations have difficulties defining measurements and using them to implement continuous improvement. The SEI has recognized the struggle with measurements, and has enhanced version 1.3 to provide better support. The measurement and analysis process area provides a table that links business needs via information needs to measures. David Card describes different levels of decision making in organizations, and...
