A week from today Philadelphia voters will cast their ballots in the May 17 primary.
They will vote for a number of important positions including mayor, city council, judges and sheriff.
The following is the Tribune's list of endorsed candidates for selected races.
For Mayor we strongly recommend Michael A. Nutter for a second term over Milton Street, a former state legislator and ex-convict and the mayor's opponent in the Democratic primary.
Mayor Nutter has led the city well during tough economic times. He has managed to balance the budget without drastic cuts to services. Libraries, recreation centers and city pools have remained open. City positions have been eliminated mainly through attrition and not major layoffs.
The mayor has been a good crisis manager who has put Philadelphia in a better fiscal position than mayors of most large cities.
The mayor's response to the recession should not overshadow some of his other accomplishments.
Mayor Nutter's focus on ethics and accountability has helped increase trust in city government. Ethics in governments is crucial in attracting business and reducing voter apathy. A strong, ethical government is essential in fighting against the old adage that Philadelphia is both corrupt and content. The mayor is changing the city's image to being a government that is ethical and efficient and on the move.
