Cable networks used to have a simple fall programming strategy: duck.
USA Network, Lifetime and the others would lie low in September while the broadcast networks rolled out their new series, promotional trumpets blaring. When the hoopla died down, the cable guys would sneak their stuff out.
But more and more, cable networks look at fall as anybody's game. As an expanding array of networks compete for limited space on cable systems, it has become crucial to offer original, identity-establishing programs.
Here's an overview of what cable subscribers - and satellite dish owners - can expect:
A&E Network
"Biography" - New editions on Roseanne (today), Danny Thomas (Thursday), David and Goliath (Sept. 23), Jack Lemmon (Sept. 30).
"The Straight Dope" - Weekly series (on Sundays) based on a syndicated newspaper column of the same title by Cecil Adams, that answers questions such as, "How do they put the M's on M&Ms?"
"Biography for Kids" - New Saturday-morning edition of AEN's most popular series. Starting Oct. 5.
"Las Vegas" - Four-hour history of the gambling mecca; narrated by Richard Crenna. Dec. 1 and 2.
Black Entertainment TV
"Live Wire" - The format sounds like "Nightline," but the topics will extend beyond politics and viewers will be able to call in. Premiere to be announced.
"Comic View" - For its fifth season, the stand-up comedy series will expand to an hour. Performances will be woven into a "sit-soap," a serial sitcom about the clientele and management of a small hotel called the...
