LITTLE FALLS -- The 104-year-old Great Notch train station is set to close Jan. 16 because of "anemic" ridership, NJ Transit officials said.
The transit agency held off plans to close the rail stop because of sparse riders, following complaints from commuters and local officials to keep it open. In April, NJ Transit added two morning stops to and two evening stops from Hoboken, where the Montclair-Boonton Line terminates, with the stipulation that the number of riders would have to increase to at least 75 riders per week after six months to keep the station open. That didn't happen.
The Great Notch station averages fewer than 10 riders per weekday. On Tuesday, one person, Aditi Patel, boarded the 7:19 a.m. train to Hoboken. On Monday, no one boarded or exited the train when it arrived at 4:18 p.m. at the station.
The 26-year-old Little Falls resident said she walks to the Great Notch train station as part of the commute to her job at a government agency in downtown Manhattan. But once the station closes next month, a family member will have to drive her to the Montclair State station and pick her up again in the afternoon.
