A former Parsippany-Troy Hills man who fled overseas with his two small children after police found his estranged wife strangled in her township apartment has received a palace pardon in Jordan.
Mohammed Abequa, 53, was tried in Jordan and convicted of killing his American-born wife, Nihal, and sentenced in July 1995 to 15 years in prison.
"I'm very distressed and upset by this," said Morris County Prosecutor John B. Dangler. "It's really an affront to our sense of right and wrong and justice."
Morris County authorities thought Abequa would serve at least 10 years of the sentence, but learned Tuesday that Abequa had been released from Suwaqa Prison last month after receiving the pardon.
Dangler said the victim's family has been alerted to Abequa's release. "They were very upset with this," he said.
