Activists for gay and lesbian rights are trying to convince Minnesota politicians that there is safety in numbers.
The activists, working under the banner of the Human Rights Campaign Fund, have sent out hundreds of letters to Minnesota political, religious, business, labor and community leaders, asking them to sign a statement opposing job and housing discrimination based on sexual preference.
The signatures will be used in advertisements and in other ways to encourage politicians that it is not political suicide to support laws that bar discrimination against gays and lesbians. If the National Endorsement Campaign is judged a success in Minnesota, it will be replicated nationally.
