One year ago (Saturday, May 28, 1994)
-- Doctors at Presbyterian University Hospital were treating an elderly woman for the same type of flesh-destroying strep infection that, in a matter of days, had spread to at least 12 people in Britain, killing at least two. Infectious disease specialists said the disease -- group A streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis -- was usually associated with wound infections and was not considered likely to develop into an epidemic.
