Is turning the other cheek always enough? That's the big question for the protagonist of K.S. Nikakis's new Kira Chronicles series. Kira's family members are the finest healers of a society dedicated to peace. They shelter in a vast forest, taking care never to leave a path aggressors can follow to their idyllic world. When the world outside harshly intrudes, Kira - considered a leader by her people - slowly realises that her presence is bringing death to the forest. Beset by self doubt and confused by an unspoken romance with the community's top defender, she must decide whether to leave the sanctuary of the trees and enlist the help of her people's estranged warrior. Nikakis writes well, but the book's gentle pace may irritate some. That said, those who persevere will be rewarded - once the absorbing story captures the reader's attention, it doesn't let go.
