Madison, Wis. AP Many of the unlicensed video slot machines operating in Wisconsin taverns came from New Jersey companies accused in court records of being associated with organized crime, a newspaper investigation has disclosed.
The Wisconsin State Journal said in a copyright story Sunday that its investigation had found at least 15 video gaming machines in five counties and traced them to SMS Manufacturing or Grayhound Electronics, both of New Jersey.
Few of the machines identified the owner, contrary to state regulations, or named the manufacturer, the newspaper said.
Records show many SMS and Grayhound games are owned by companies backing a lobbying campaign by the Wisconsin Amusement and Music Operators to legalize video gambling.
