Businesses having trouble complying with Lower Hutt's new trade waste bylaws have had four years' notice it was going to happen, says Hutt City Council's wastewater projects manager Alan Bannatyne.
His comment follows complaints last week from two companies who were forced to drastically cut effluent flows into the system in preparation for the commissioning of Hutt Valley's new $60 million sewage treatment plant.
New Zealand Fish Products, which takes up to 50 tonnes of fish waste a day to make fish meal, closed off its sewer connection last week as it was not able to comply with the new bylaw.
