A Wellington school is bucking the trend on banning Pokemon trading cards from the playground and is instead encouraging children to play with them.
Pokemon cards have been banned in some schools because of fights in the playground, but Evans Bay Intermediate principal Neil Withington said he believed the ban was short-sighted.
"Tremendous skills can be learned by having these cards and trading them. Often kids don't have much money these days and this is a way of understanding values," he said.
Pokemon, which started in Japan as an electronic hand-held game, is all the rage with children. They can buy trading cards and other collectables featuring the characters.
