THE Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa, uses state-of-the-art technology to make it one of the most earthquake-proofed buildings in the country.
When the huge complex - it contains 80,000cu m of concrete and two million metres of reinforcing steel - was being built there was concern about its site on reclaimed land on the Wellington waterfront.
But designers have proofed Te Papa for a one-in-2000-years earthquake, while the normal standard is protection for a lesser- magnitude one-in-150-years event.
