Officials at Charlestowne Mall's parent company will continue to "shop around" for a buyer after agreeing to sell 13 of its other malls to a California-based company, Mayor Sue Klinkhamer confirmed.
Charlestowne is not included in the pending acquisition of privately-held Wilmorite Properties, Charlestowne's owner, by the publicly-traded Macerich Co. The $2.3 billion deal is expected to close in March, both companies announced two weeks ago.
Under the deal approved by both companies' boards of directors, Santa Monica, Calif.,-based Macerich will acquire 13 of Wilmorite's shopping centers. Seven are located near the company's Rochester, N.Y., headquarters, with two others in New York state and the remainder in Connecticut, New Jersey, Kentucky and Virginia. Neither Charlestowne nor Wilmorite's malls in Kingsport, Tenn., and Holland, Mich., are included.
Klinkhamer said she's glad Charlestowne isn't part of the purchase.
