Abstract
Good crop production is dependent upon adequate development of the root system. Therefore information on root development and the factors which influence root growth are of great practical interest. In addition to morphological and ecological data, knowledge about the function of roots is of at least equal importance. Because of the difficult accessibility and the complexity of the root environment rather little is known about root activity under field conditions. In recent years a good tool for root studies has been developed through the application of radioactive isotopes as tracers (HALL et al. 1953).
