Abstract

This art-based self-study seeks to explore the connections between art therapy and the role-playing tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons. Other creative modalities like play, drama, and narrative drama therapies utilize these techniques to gain a deeper understanding of the client’s identity, perspective, aspirations, and goals. This study explores the growth of my identity as a creative arts therapist since entering into my graduate program. By participating in and reflecting on the progression of five campaign sessions, the story and character provide a mirror for values and actions that could be reflective of applicable situations to the journey of becoming a creative art therapist. Reviewing artwork surrounding the sessions illustrates themes of growth, resilience, support, beginning, endings, and potential. This research shows the power that individuals have to rewrite their own narratives and the effect that has on themselves.
