A dolgozatom elsődleges motivációja személyes érdeklődésemből fakad. Tipikus közép európai, több nemzetiségű gyökerekkel rendelkező emberként mindig is rendkívül erősen hatott rám a régió sokszínűsége – ennek minden szépségével és ellentmondásával együtt. Azonban ezek között is kiemelkedő érdeklődéssel fordulok a határok kérdése felé. Ez egyrészről a térképek iránt egészen korán kialakult lelkesedésből fakad, másrészt abból az - elmúlt évek szakmai és személyes tapasztalatain is alapuló - egyre tudatosabb szemléletmódból, ahogyan a körülöttünk felépülő épített, táji és társadalmi környezetet igyekszem értelmezni és vizsgálni. Figyelemre méltónak találom azokat az összefüggéseket (és sokszor ellentmondásokat) ahogyan a fizikai és társadalmi környezetünk viszonyul egymáshoz. Ezeknek a komplex és néha nehezen felfejthető viszonyrendszereknek szinte kimeríthetetlen számú példája vesz minket körül itt a Kárpát-medencében. Az említhető példák között is kiemelkedik a számtalanszor át- és újra rajzolt határok komplex együttese, melyek köré e dolgozat központi kérdéseit és mondanivalóját is építem. A határ ugyanis több pusztán egy térképészeti eszköznél, életünket és környezetünket egyszerre számtalan dimenzióban befolyásolja és jelenlétének földrajzi, társadalmi lenyomatai hosszú időn át képesek hatással lenni ránk. A dolgozat szándéka elsősorban nem a határ szerteágazó és komplex (egyébként sokak által sokféleképpen magyarázott) fogalomkörének újabb, pontosabb vagy mindenre kiterjedően „igaz” definiálása. Sokkal inkább egy olyan sajátos értelmezési tartomány bemutatása, ami elsősorban személyes tapasztalataimból és a tágabban vett régiónk egyedi helyzetének tapasztalataiból épül fel. A központi és perifériális helyzet, az ütközőterület és az „olvasztótégely” állandóan jelenlévő kettősségeinek dilemmája nem csak a Kárpát Medence kapcsán előkerülő szinte örök toposz: épp úgy a határ, mint elvont, absztrakt hely sajátos tulajdonságaiként is érthetjük őket. Ha ezt az összehasonlítást tekintem a dolgozatom kiindulópontjának, akkor úgy is fogalmazhatnék: a határok, mint sajátos helyek megértése számomra a saját, közös Kárpát-medencei környezetünk különleges összefüggéseinek megismerését és megértését is jelenti. Ez a dolgozat ennek a megismerési és megértési folyamatnak egy kiemelt állomása, egy olyan összegzés, amiben eddigi tapasztalataimat és tudásomat strukturálva, konkrét példákat is felhasználva és bemutatva kívánom közreadni.

The primary motivation of my thesis stems from my personal interest. As a typical Central European person with multi-national roots, I have always been extremely influenced by the diversity of the region - with all its beauty and contradictions. However, even among these, I am particularly interested in the issue of borders. On the one hand, this stems from an early enthusiasm for maps, and on the other hand, from the increasingly conscious way of thinking - based on my professional and personal experiences of the past years - in which I try to interpret and examine the built, landscape and social environment around us. I find the connections (and often contradictions) in the way our physical and social environment relate to each other remarkable. We are surrounded by an almost inexhaustible number of examples of these complex and sometimes difficult to decipher relationship systems here in the Carpathian Basin. Among the examples that can be mentioned, the complex ensemble of borders drawn over and over again stands out, around which I build the central questions and what to say of this thesis. The border is more than just a cartographic tool, it affects our lives and environment in countless dimensions at the same time, and the geographical and social imprints of its presence can affect us for a long time. The purpose of the thesis is not primarily to define a new, more precise or comprehensively "true" definition of the wide-ranging and complex concept of the border (in any case, interpreted in many ways by many). Rather, it is a presentation of a specific range of interpretation, which is built primarily from my personal experiences and from the experiences of the unique situation of our wider region. The dilemma of the ever-present dualities of the central and peripheral position, the collision area and the "melting pot" is not only an almost eternal topos arising in connection with the Carpathian Basin: they can be understood as the specific properties of the border as well as an abstract, abstract place. If I consider this comparison as the starting point of my thesis, then I could also put it this way: for me, understanding borders as specific places also means getting to know and understanding the special contexts of our own, common environment in the Carpathian Basin. This thesis is a prominent stage of this learning and understanding process, a summary in which I intend to publish my experiences and knowledge so far in a structured way, using and presenting specific examples.

The thesis can be considered the organic continuation of an earlier research and published article with similar title which investigated the interpretation possibilities of different spatial and social aspects of the border imprints in Călugereni, Mureș County, Transylvania, at the location of the masterwork connected to the thesis. This paper intends to both broadening the content of the topic and justifying the results of this more general and extensive context exploration in a location which I am personally and strongly attached to. The three border-cases chosen in Budapest – the historical urban borders, the Jewish quarter in Pest, and the fortification system around the capital dated to the Second World War – represent very varied spatial and chronological scales. The structure of the three study cases relies on a three-fold compositional unit, as a result of „rapport-matrix” trinity established for the description of individual case-studies. Between the physical dimensions (phenomenon) of border imprints and the related social narratives (meaning) the bond is the time, the main organizing element of the matrix. Hence the case-studies are presented through the contemporary interpretation of border imprints and their spatial occurrence and position in the urban fabric. In the last part of the paper, in the summary we return to our starting point; the conclusions of the earlier paper will meet the results of the present work, thus the masterwork, the organic element of the summary and the fourth study case, can be interpreted as the contemporary reading of this last chapter.
