Lei de Okun e Efeitos de Histerese - Uma Aplicação ao Caso de Portugal

Abstract

A Lei de Okun é um tema bastante estudado em economia. Esta lei refere-se à existênciade uma relação inversa entre a taxa de desemprego e o output. O objetivo desta dissertaçãoé, testar a presença de histerese na relação entre a taxa de desemprego e o output emPortugal. Para tal, foi inicialmente feita uma revisão da literatura existente sobre a lei deOkun e sobre o conceito de histerese. O teste empírico à existência de histerese na relaçãode Okun baseou-se na estimação de uma equação de switching derivada do modelo dehisterese designado de linear play. Utilizamos dados trimestrais compreendidos entre 2010 e2017 referentes à taxa de desemprego e ao output em Portugal. Os resultados obtidosrevelam que a relação entre a taxa de desemprego e o outputem Portugal apresentamhisterese.

Okun's Law is a well-studied subject in economics. This law refers to the existence of an inverse relationship between the unemployment rate and the output. The objective of this dissertation is to test the presence of hysteresis in the relationship between the unemployment rate and the output in Portugal. For this, a review of the existing literature on Okun's law and on the concept of hysteresis was initially made. The empirical test for the existence of hysteresis in the Okun relation was based on the estimation of a switching equation derived from the hysteresis model called linear play. We used quarterly data between 2010 and 2017 regarding the unemployment rate and the output in Portugal. The results show that the relationship between the unemployment rate and the output in Portugal presents hysteresis.
