Abstract
The research question was whether the psychosocial adjustment of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren is related to available and utilized social support.
Grandparents who had assumed primary responsibility for raising one or more of their grandchildren (N = 102) completed a survey questionnaire assessing their perceptions of available and utilized social support, three psychosocial adjustment measures (subjective well-being, depression, and anxiety), and a background questionnaire. Participation in a peer support group for caregiving grandparents was also related positively to each of the adjustment measures. These relationships did not differ as a function of the respondent's self-reported ethnic/cultural group identification. Results were interpreted as consistent with theories of stress and coping.
