Abstract

This critical evaluation and recommendation paper examined the challenges of overseeing shared research resources and proposed a new management system for the sponsor organization, a cancer center in the state of Georgia. This qualitative study collected interview data from 32 key stakeholders (research faculty, shared resources staff, and administrators). The data revealed the elements needed for the new system were:

• Standard and customized metrics to evaluate the performance of each shared resource.

• Effective communication channels between the key stakeholders

• Speedy management decisions

• Transparent decision process

• Equal representation regarding the acquisition and oversight of shared resources The new system incorporated elements of proven business models as a framework. The new system will build on the collaborative organizational culture of the sponsor organization as leverage to integrate the new system. Although customized for the sponsor organization, the proposed system may provide a model to assist other research organizations dealing with similar challenges.
