Abstract

Experimental and numerical tools were developed to assist in the design and analysis of tape head contours. Interferometric equipment was invented and built to enable measurement of head/tape spacing in the range from 250 nm to contact. This equipment was applied to measure head/tape spacing in both longitudinal and helical tape recorders. In addition to the experimental apparatus, numerical simulations were developed to predict head/tape spacing, contact pressure, and head contour wear.
