Abstract

Three piano recitals were given in lieu of a written dissertation.

The first dissertation concert took place on October 28th, 2022, in Britton Recital Hall. The program featured the Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 664 by Franz Schubert; Excursions, op. 20 by Samuel Barber; Nocturnes, op. 48 Nos. 1 and 2 by Frédéric Chopin; Notturno in G Minor, H. 337 by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel; the Notturno from Soirées musicales, op. 6 by Clara Wieck-Schumann; the Nocturne, op. 165 by Cécile Chaminade; and the Notturno from 6 Pieces for Piano by Ottorino Respighi.

The second concert, a lecture recital, focused on Steven Stucky’s Piano Sonata. It took place on December 20th, 2022, in Britton Recital Hall. The topic of the lecture recital was the exploration of different compositional techniques used in Steven Stucky’s Piano Sonata, and a discussion of the role of a musician performing contemporary pieces. 

The third concert was held in Britton Recital Hall on July 4th, 2023, featuring the Chorale Fantasy No. 3 by Shinuh Lee; the Piano Sonata No. 28 in A Major, Op. 101 by Ludwig van Beethoven; Preludes IV and VI from Preludes, Op. 23 by Sergei Rachmaninoff; the Piano Sonata No. 2 in G# Minor, Op. 19 by Aleksandr Scriabin; and the Romance movement of 6 Klavierstücke, Op.118, by Johannes Brahms.
