If Mormon women give their lives to selfless service and Christlike living, they could be a leavening force for good in the world, said the new leaders of the LDS Relief Society on Saturday at the church's annual women's meeting.
In a rousing evening of sermon and song, Relief Society President Mary Ellen Smoot and her counselors, Sister Virginia Jensen and Sister Sheri Dew, took the podium for the first time since being named last April to address more than 5,000 LDS women in the Tabernacle on Temple Square. Thousands more female members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were watching via satellite in 3,200 chapels across North America.
``You will be instrumental in the Lord's work as were the great women of biblical times and the pioneer sisters of the restoration,'' Smoot said.
