Abstract
Aim:To study the incidence, risk fators and analyze maternal and fetal outcome of pregnancies complicated by placenta previa.
Materials and Methods:50 pregnancies diagnosed with placenta previa during study period (Oct 2016-July 2017) were analyzed. The data on potential risk factors was compiled; the information on the maternal and fetal outcome was subjected to appropriate statistical analysis and following deductions provided.
Results:The incidence of placenta previa was 0.97%. Factors significantly associated with development of placenta previa were advanced maternal age, multiparity, previous caesarean section and previous abortions. Maternal complications seen were anaemia (26%), PPH was seen in 38%. Caeserean Hysterectomy was done in 8%. Maternal mortality was 2/50. The complication seen in neonates was prematurity (34%), respiratory distress (18%), Asphyxia (12%). 30% required NICU admission. The perinatal mortality calculated was 0.85/1000 live birth.
Conclusion:Good antenatal care, early detection of placenta previa by ultrasound and conservative management including aggressive use of antepartum blood transfusion in cases of moderate to severe bleeding and early elective termination of pregnancy by judging fetal maturity in centres equipped with NICU facilities appears to have dramatic reduction in perinatal mortality in placenta previa.
