Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Thyroid diseases are the commonest endocrine diseases worldwide. India too, is no exception. Among all the endocrinological diseases, second to diabetes mellitus, diseases of thyroid especially low thyroid state-Hypothyroidism. An underperforming thyroid, the main purpose of thyroid gland is to ‘run the body’s metabolism’. It is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with slow metabolism.
Thyroid gland is an important endocrine organ which starts functioning in early fetal life and maintains the level of metabolism in the tissues that is optimal for their normal function and related with physical and mental growth. Imbalance of thyroid function can arise many severe problems. There can be many forms of thyroid disease and Hypothyroidism is one of the major forms of it. Primary Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disease that was seen in the clinical practice especially for family physicians, Hypothyroidism is usually a primary process resulting from failure of the thyroid gland to produce adequate amounts of hormone. It may also be caused by a lack of thyroid hormone secretion secondary to the failure of adequate thyrotropin i.e thyroid stimulating hormone( TSH) secretion from the pituitary gland, or thyrotropin- releasing hormone(TRH) from the hypothalamus ( secondary or tertiary hypothyroidism)
In Homoeopathy, diseases are treated with Individualisation method where a remedy is selected depending upon the type of totality received in the case, the severity of the condition & susceptibility of the patients. Materia medica plays an important role in clinical Treatment, but less frequent use of repertory, in its true capabilities are not known , Hence to reveal the effectiveness of Homoeopathy Medical Repertory by Robin Murphy it is the necessity to study it in detail.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To study the effectiveness of individualized medicines selected through Homoeopathic medical repertory by robin Murphy in the treatment of primary Hypothyroidism.
2. To study the effectiveness of Thyroidinum in the treatment of primary Hypothyroidism.
3. To compare the effectiveness of individualized medicines & Thyroidinum in the treatment of primary Hypothyroidism.
METHODS:
The prospective comparative clinical interventional study included 60 cases with Primary Hypothyroidism selected through purposive sampling. These cases were evaluated from single homoeopathic outpatient department (OPD) of HKE’s Dr. Maalakaraddy Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Kalaburagi. The cases were categorised into group A and group B comprising of 30 subjects each. These cases were analysed to find out the role of constitutional remedy in group A which is individualised through Homoeopathy Medical Repertory by Robin Murphy and Thyroidinum as a specific remedy in group B in the management of Primary Hypothyroidism for a period of 21 months. Data will be collected on the basis of interrogation of individual cases, physical examination and investigations. Follow up f the cases depend on severity of the symptoms and as per the need and necessity of the cases, preferably once in 15 days for 3 months and later monthly.
RESULTS:
In the present study, Out of 30 subjects treated in group A, 25 subjects improved( 84%), while 5 subjects did not improve ( 16%) and in Group B out of 30 subjects treated 17 subjects improved(56%) while 13 subjects did not improve (44%) The difference in proportion was found to be statistically significant.
