Abstract
The forces driving healthcare to increase participation in value-based models and to decarbonize are present and increasing. Especially, within the rural environment where unique challenges and opportunities exist. Supporting research shows that improved performance in these areas can provide healthcare organizations and the ecosystem with numerous co-benefits that improve the sustainability of both business and planet. As the primary driver of organizational change, leadership at the board level will be required for successful mission creation and strategy alignment for simultaneous performance improvement in value-based healthcare and decarbonization. Literature suggests that relevant board level competencies within these arenas is often absent. For rural healthcare organizations, supportive resources exist to help educate and facilitate essential board competencies. Successful boards must establish a shared understanding of sustainable value, take inventory of their composition regarding value-based healthcare and decarbonization mission critical competencies, and close any gaps within the boardroom. Subsequently, the board will need to align the sustainable value informed mission with organizational strategy. Management of resistance to change was discussed to identify challenges to implementation of these board level changes along with strategies to overcome resistance. Future research considerations were discussed to explore optimal board composition and performance within value-based healthcare and decarbonization.
