How does one measure the world's tallest building - in feet or in controversy? Its soaring height will be a symbol of New York's pre-eminence and a source of pride for the whole city, says Donald Trump. Its shadow will darken Riverside Park on autumn afternoons, stealing eight blocks of sunshine from the elderly on park benches and children in the grass, say opponents.
To John Kowal, chairman of the West Side's Community Board 7, the world's tallest building would represent the ultimate tumor in a cancer of uncontrolled urban growth. "We don't have any chemotherapy beam to shrink buildings down after they are built," he says.
Indeed, the 2,000-foot-high, 150-story building proposed by Trump for Television City seems so grotesque to some West Side critics that they dismiss it as a stalking horse, something Trump plans to bargain away after it has made 57-story towers and a 1.5-million-square-foot shopping mall seem small by comparison.
