Abstract
Background and objectives:Abnormal uterine bleeding is an abnormal bleeding from the uterus in the absence of organic disease of genital tract and demonstrable extragenitalcause.Thyroid dysfunction is marked by large number of menstrual aberrations.Heavy menstrual bleeding is most common and frequently debilitating symptom resulting in need for repeated curettage and hysterectomy.Timely detection of thyroid disorder in those presenting with menstrual dysfunction and their management can prevent surgival intervention.
This study aimed at detecting various menstrual dysfunction associated with thyroid disorder.
Methods:This study is carried out in department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, SDM college of Medical sciences and hospital Dharwad. 80 women of reproductive age group (15- 45 years) who presented with various menstrual disorders have been studied. All these patients were subjected to routine investigations and T3,T4 AND TSH estimation and were grouped as euthyroid,subclinical hypothyroid, overt hypothyroid or overt hyperthyroid.
Results:Among 80 women majority belongs to age group of 21 to 30 years (36.25%), followed by 31 to 40 years. Commonest bleeding pattern in our study was menorrhagia that is 34 (42.50%) followed by oligomenorrhoea with 17 patients (21.25%). Among 80 cases maximum number of patients with abnormal uterine bleeding are euthyroid 71.2%, and 25% belong to subclinical hypothyroidism. Age wise distribution of Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism cases among abnormal uterine bleeding patients showed that though thyroid dysfunction was seen in all age group, it was most common in 21 – 30 years( 36.25%). Thyroid dysfunction was commonest in patients with menorrhagia. In menorrhagic patients majority were euthyroid (24) followed by ix subclinical hypothyroidism(8) and in oligomenorrhoea majority were again euthyroid (10) followed by subclinical hypothyroidism (7).Thyroid dysfunction was commonest with patients with menorrhagia (12.5%) followed by oligomenorrhea (8.75 %).
