Abstract
There has been a debate on the intention of the United States’ founding fathers when the country was birthed. Some say the United States was founded as a Christian nation, while others say it was not. It is necessary to examine the charters of the original colonies, the constitutions of the thirteen original states, and the writings of the founding fathers to discover whether the United States was founded as a Christian nation.
When examining the charters of the colonies, it is realized that the colonies were started to spread the gospel, establish Christian churches, and establish a prosperous society. The constitutions allowed Christians to choose how they wanted to worship God and protected their freedom to worship and build churches. Some constitutions even required the citizens to be Christians to hold State office.
The founding fathers’ writings show that many were Christian, most were God-fearing and believed Christianity was important in people’s lives. All the information examined shows that the United States’ founding fathers intended the United States to be a Christian Nation. They did not intend for a state religion but for the nation to be Christian morally.
