Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, after years of "beauty sleep," will be waking up to a newer look next month. Sections of the park, the city's second largest, are being renovated to bring back some of its past glory. The park was the site of the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs.
Finishing touches are being put on the $3.8-million construction and landscaping project. Designed to give a new, more open and accessible layout, it is expected to be completed by Nov. 14, according to park officials.
"This will increase the identity of the park," Arne Abramowitz, the park's administrator. "It will bring the park back to its former grandeur."
The reconstruction, Abramowitz said, symbolizes the history of the park. Most of the it involves fixing structures that have deteriorated from inclement weather and vandalism. Abramowitz said it is the park's first major reconstruction since the last World's Fair.
