All seven lanes of the Manhattan Bridge will be opened to traffic today for the first time in 20 months, as the crossing undergoes a 16-month lull in construction, the state Department of Transportation said.
Two Manhattan-bound traffic lanes and a subway track on the bridge's east side have been closed since April, 1986, when severe corrosion was found in an eyebar anchoring one of the structure's four suspension cables.
The two closed lanes reopen today, restoring full service to the 150,000 motorists who daily use the 79-year-old bridge, state DOT spokeswoman Phyllis Hirshberg confirmed....
